Overview

The Sindhu Central University (SCU) is established by an Act of Parliament, 2009 in the UT of Ladakh. The university will facilitate, promotion of avenues for higher education and research for the intellectual development of the people of entire UT of Ladakh including Leh, Kargil and the whole of India.

  • This is the First Central University named after an ancient river the “Sindhu” name derived from Sanskrit ‘Sindh’, specifically the river Indus, depicting the Indus valley civilization. In Sanskrit, its range of meanings includes: stream, river; Indus; flood; sea or ocean; region or country in the vicinity of the Indus, Sindh, people of Sindh.
  • Sindh was found to be an apt name as the river rises in Tibet, passes through Ladakh, connects Kargil through Suru tributary, flows through Gilgit-Baltistan in Occupied Northern areas, then empties into Arabian sea near the port of Karachi.
  • The first India’s trans-Himalayan Central University is the world’s highest university situated at an altitude of around 3500 meters above mean sea level. The advantage of the location is to offer region-specific Research Centres/ Centres of Excellence/ Incubation Centres etc. and connect entire India with Ladakh, Leh, Kargil and beyond.
  • The academic programs are mentored by IITs in achieving excellence, quality and relevance taking into the vision, mission & objectives laid therein. The overall aim will be to promote education integrated with intellectual, spiritual, and personal growth through grounded, connected and committed education.
  • The University will offer innovative programmes in varied disciplines, training and research with holistic & multi-disciplinary focus, research-based Master’s programmes. The University will be equipped for futuristic, technology enabled learning.

The University campus will be established in 110 acres of land at village Khaltsi situated in between Leh and Kargil. The jurisdiction of the upcoming Sindhu University will cover the entire UT of Ladakh including Leh, Kargil, and beyond to whole of India.

The government has established a central university viz. ‘Sindhu Central University’ (SCU) in the UT of Ladakh to ensure increase in accessibility and quality of higher education, and to facilitate and promote avenues of higher education and research for the intellectual development of the people.

In August 2021, a bill seeking to establish a central university was passed in the Lok Sabha covering the entire UT of Ladakh including Leh, Kargil, and beyond which were earlier left out of the jurisdiction of central universities in Jammu & Kashmir after the state was bifurcated into two Union Territories.Subsequently, the Central Universities Act, 2009 was further amended as ‘The Central Universities (Amendment) Act, 2021 and included establishment of ‘Sindhu Central University’ (SCU) having its territorial jurisdiction extending to the whole of the UT of Ladakh.

The University will conceptualize innovative programmes offering holistic & multi-disciplinary education and research-based master programmes. The University will also inculcate provisions of Online and Distance Learning (ODL) courses in line with NEP 2020 and UGC guidelines offering multi-entry/exit options and accumulation of the credits in the Academic Credit Bank.

The University will be a unique proposition amongst the Central Universities to meet the geographical needs and higher education demands in a new and emerging trends of education.

The university academic programmes will be mentored by IITs in achieving excellence, quality and relevance taking into the vision, mission & objectives.
